Costs of certification

The cost of certification comprises the EBC label fee, C-sink registration, the on-site inspection by BioInspecta, and the biochar analysis at the selected laboratory.

For the first 10 years of the EBC, the development of the standard and certification system was financed by the Ithaka Institute, a non-profit research foundation. However, with the increasing number of EBC certified companies, a more professional back-office, client service, and IT backbone is necessary and needs to be covered by the EBC label fees. For this reason, we introduced 2018 the first modest label fees (100 € per company) and increase these fees until 2022 to a level that allows reaching break-even. We are confident that we can thus find the necessary investment to build the biochar certification system for the expected exponential growth of the biochar and C-sink industry.

Further Costs

The total cost of certification is to a certain extend variable as it depends on the location of the production site (travel cost for the auditor), the complexity of the production (duration of the control), compliance of the producer, and annual production amount.
